Update 8-30

Capture the Flag started today!  The kids are excited and seem to enjoy the book.  Homework will be given based on the book on weekdays, for Fridays their will be no Capture the Flag homework.  Tuesday we read the book, The Flag Maker together to tell about the history of the star spangled banner flag.  A letter went home today and was emailed with details about Capture the Flag.

We have been doing goal setting in writing and reading.  See a sample below.

Also, the big push is that Reading is Thinking.  We practice that daily.  Post-it notes are used to show our thoughts along with our readers' notebooks.  Check out the post-its below.  Prior to this, we reviewed the parts of fiction through mini-lessons and connected them to our choice books.

Update 8-21

We got to know each other by making Who am I? projects.  The kids had fun making them and we will share them in class.  Today, we set up our reading notebooks.  The kids had a chance to decorate them and glue in tabs.  Those will be used in class.

Our focus continues to be that Reading is Thinking.  We read a short story about Mr. Peggler a substitute, which had a surprising twist at the end.  Ask you child about it.  Later in the week, we will be reading a story called "Schools First Day of School." We will be reviewing the parts of fiction- characters, setting, and plot.



Next week, we will start reading the book Capture the Flag.  It will be classwork and homework until it is finished.  Audio recordings will be available for anyone interested, I will show the kids this next week.  We use this book to model how we think as readers and to review the parts of fiction.  It is a fabulous book!  Read about it here.    Our writing will be tied into this next week too.
